Chéri Samba or Samba wa Mbimba N’zingo Nuni Masi Ndo Mbasi (born December 30, 1956 in Kinto M’Vuila) is a painter from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is one of the most famous contemporary African artists.
His paintings almost always include text in French and Lingala, commenting on life in Africa and the modern world.
I first discovered Samba at Tate Modern, London, I was intrigued by his use of colour, the indepth detail and concept behind his pieces, at the time of the visit I failed stupidly to jot his name down, and later on in that year I came across a book, which helped to increase and maintain my understanding of his art.
Here are some scans from a book, of which I own .........and some images from various websites
